TOTTENHAM TALK

In the news this morning is Danny Murphy telling the London Evening Standard that Fernando Llorente is an excellent addition to the squad and that Serge Aurier is a decent full-back. Many would say he is a bit better than decent.

“Llorente should be excellent back-up for Harry Kane but, if Tottenham are chasing the game, they could play together. Spurs face a lot of defensively minded teams so Llorente will allow them to get balls into the box from wide – and there is nothing wrong with playing that way when required.
“I also like the look of Serge Aurier. He has been a decent full-back and is an excellent athlete, so he should be able to cope with the physical side of English football.”

Transfers are still a matter of balancing the books for Spurs with outgoing money matched by incoming money, player sales produce the opportunity for purchases. In reality, transfer fees are lumped together into annual instalments, both incoming fees and outgoing fees. The positive difference in these figures adds to any additional transfer pot.

We know these figures for the next few years and thus know where we stand. Not all players are going to stay forever, much as fans would like them to, that isn't the real world. Big players will be sold in future, every club sells them, but that allows future stars to come in.

It will remain that way until the new stadium starts generating additional income, then we can start addressing issues such as wages which will then help to keep the players happy in the manner fans want.

There is a clear strategy, it just can't be implemented at the speed fans might like.
