North Korea: Missile launch just 'the first step'

North Korea’s latest launch of a ballistic missile is just the beginning, Pyongyang warned on Tuesday night, according to Reuters.

 

The North's official KCNA news agency reported that the country’s leader Kim Jong Un guided a launch of the Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile in a drill to counter the joint military exercises by South Korean and U.S. militaries.

 

"The current ballistic rocket launching drill like a real war is the first step of the military operation of the KPA in the Pacific and a meaningful prelude to containing Guam," KCNA quoted Kim as saying.

 

KPA stands for the Korean People's Army, the North's military.

 

The missile launched by North Korea on Monday night flew over Japan broke into three pieces and fell into the waters off Japan's Hokkaido. No injuries or damage were reported.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said “all options are on the table” following the missile launch.

 

North Korea threatened a missile attack on Guam, a tiny U.S. territory in the Pacific, in response to Trump’s warning that Pyongyang faced "fire and fury like the world has never seen" if it continued to threaten the United States with its missile and nuclear programs.

Later, however, North Korea toned down the rhetoric and Kim said the attack on Guam would be put off while he watches U.S. actions.
